La Jota es un antiguo género de danza y canto tradicional ibérico, nacida durante la última parte de la presencia árabe y judía, en un entorno fronterizo donde la mezcla entre las 3 religiones definía la cultura. Y tuvo un papel importante en la sociedad rural y sus rituales a lo largo de los siglos, prevaleciendo los cantos más importantes en la cohesión social de los pueblos donde se representaba.

Deriva de la palabra medieval "xiota" (pronunciada [ˈʃota] o [ˈʃɔta]), deriva del mozárabe "šáwta" (salto) y su ritmo suele ser compaseado en 3/4, aunque algunos autores sostienen que el 6/8 se adapta mejor a la estructura del ciclo coreográfico y estrófico.

ENGLISH VERSION

The Jota is an ancient genre of traditional Iberian dance and song, born during the last part of the Arab and Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, in a border environment where the mixture between the 3 religions defined the culture. It played an important role in rural society and its rituals throughout the centuries, with the most important songs prevailing in the social cohesion of the villages where it was performed.

The name JOTA derives from the medieval word "xiota" (pronounced [ˈʃota] or [ˈʃɔta]), derived from the Mozarabic "šáwta" (jump) and its rhythm is usually in 3/4 time signature, although some authors argue that 6/8 is better suited to the structure of the choreographic and strophic cycle.

The rural exodus of the 20th century led to the decline of the Jota.... until now
